Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs in the United States over a potential battery fire risk, and owners of the affected vehicles are being told to limit how much they charge their cars while engineers investigate.
The recall covers model-year 2023 through 2026 ID.4 vehicles. According to the company, the risk appears to be linked to charging the battery above 80 percent of its capacity, so affected owners have been instructed to restrict charging until a fix is available. Volkswagen estimates that only about 0.1 percent of the recalled vehicles actually have the defect, but the company has not yet identified the root cause or developed a permanent remedy.
For owners, the practical effect is immediate: usable battery capacity is temporarily reduced, which means shorter real-world driving range until the repair is completed. The recall is one of the largest EV battery-related actions in the U.S. market this year and highlights the continued challenges automakers face in managing high-voltage battery safety at scale.
Volkswagen says it is working with regulators and battery suppliers on the investigation, and owners will be notified once a permanent solution is ready.
