'Yiwu Studies' Draws Global Academic Attention as the City Diversifies Away from Western M

Against a backdrop of rising tariff barriers in some countries, Yiwu merchants have not passively absorbed squeezed orders — instead, a bottom-up market diversification transformation has quietly taken hold, drawing international media and academic attention.

The Financial Times reported that local operators have actively reduced their dependence on European and American markets, focusing instead on ASEAN, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Data bears out the shift in Yiwu's export structure: in 2025, Yiwu's imports and exports with Africa, Latin America and ASEAN grew 23.4%, 14.1% and 46.7% respectively year-on-year.

The radiating power of market demand extends well beyond the merchandise trade itself. CNN has long referred to Yiwu as the "Christmas Capital" — a best-selling American Christmas item can complete the entire chain of design, mold-making and mass production in just 45 days. Even as China-US trade frictions continue, large European and American retailers remain reluctant to give up the mature industrial chain Yiwu offers.

Spain's El Pais argued that Yiwu has spent decades honing the ability to turn any passing fashion trend into a commercial opportunity. In 2026, with extreme heat across parts of Europe, Yiwu's small commodities market entered another peak sales season. Reporters on the ground saw cooling products including fan-equipped hats, spray mist umbrellas, pocket fans, cooling blankets and sun-protection sleeves, most of which are destined for European markets. Ahead of the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, national team merchandise also lined the shelves of Yiwu's markets in a silent competition.

Beyond media coverage, "Yiwu studies" has become popular in overseas academia, with numerous international journals and leading universities conducting in-depth research. Xu Yinghong, a senior lecturer at the CPC Yiwu Municipal Party School, noted that the European Research Council under the EU provided special funding for a project led by the University of Sussex, working with Cambridge University and the University of Copenhagen to conduct field research.

Xu believes this research rewrites a globalization narrative long dominated by the West. Modern overseas trade has largely relied on maritime power and large capital monopolies, whereas the Yiwu trading wave was driven spontaneously by millions of individual household businesses, building an interdependent commercial community through small commodity trade and pioneering a new people-driven trade model that domestic scholars describe as a "template of populism in globalization."

Yiwu's commercial DNA traces back to the long-standing tradition of "trading chicken feathers for candy," when peddlers walked the countryside exchanging sweets for chicken feathers and scrap materials, earning meager profits. Not afraid of small business and never dismissive of modest earnings, this trading tradition continues to this day.
