China's new energy vehicle exports reached 3.435 million units in the first eight months of 2026, more than double the same period last year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Export growth has become the decisive factor offsetting a sharp slowdown in domestic retail demand.
The most pronounced structural feature of September was the divergence between weak domestic performance and strong overseas sales. According to CPCA data covering September 1-27, passenger vehicle retail sales fell 29% year-on-year and wholesale volumes fell 30%, yet cumulative NEV wholesale volume for the period still rose 7%. The retail-wholesale divergence is largely explained by exports.
At the company level, September overseas sales set new records across the board. Chery exported 207,800 vehicles, up 45.6%; BYD exported 180,700, up 154%; and Geely exported 106,700, up 162%, marking a fourth consecutive month above 100,000. Geely has announced a target of one million units in overseas sales for the full year. Great Wall Motor's overseas sales accounted for more than half of its total volume. Among the newer entrants, Leapmotor exported more than 27,000 units in September, while Xpeng operates more than 500 overseas stores and plans to launch the G9L in 64 countries and regions.
Exports have become a core growth engine supporting both earnings and power battery installation demand. The China Automobile Dealers Association's September auto consumption index stood at 88.9, rising month-on-month, with the in-store index at 91.7, pointing to a possible further recovery in October.
Order conversion timing is another factor. Delivery cycles for hot new models have lengthened — the Xiaomi N90 is expected to take 11 to 13 weeks — meaning some National Day orders may be fulfilled in the late fourth quarter, supporting the October-December delivery curve while smoothing single-month volatility.
Several overseas launches at the Paris Motor Show, which opens on October 12, are expected to provide further catalysts, including the Leapmotor D19, overseas debuts of the Xpeng G9L, and the European premiere of the Li Auto i6.
