French AI lab Mistral unveiled Mistral Large 4 (ML4), a multimodal model scaling to one trillion parameters, on October 8, 2026, aiming to rival frontier systems from the United States and China. Internally nicknamed Le Chonk, the model was trained entirely on Mistral's own infrastructure using just 4,000 Nvidia GPUs - two to three times less compute than Chinese rivals and far less than closed-source American developers, according to science vice-president Pierre Stock. French President Emmanuel Macron described the effort as a third way in AI. ML4 is available now via a public guardrail endpoint, with model weights planned for public release after a three-week safety evaluation. The launch argues that independent labs can reach frontier scale through architectural and training efficiency rather than massive hardware clusters.
