Norway essentially completed its transition to electric mobility, with battery-electric vehicles taking a record 98.8 percent of new car registrations in September 2026, according to national registration data. Denmark followed at 88.8 percent for the month, while the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden all ran close to or above half of new sales.
The Netherlands reached a 52.8 percent battery-electric share in September after climbing without a break from 25.3 percent in January, the steepest rise of any market tracked. Belgium passed 50 percent for the first time in September. Sweden came in at 45.8 percent for the quarter.
Among the large western markets the order changed over the summer. France rose to 38.6 percent in the third quarter and Germany to 32.0 percent, both with record Septembers, while the UK stayed at 28.3 percent. Southern Europe still lags, with Spain at 14.1 percent and Italy slipping to about 6.8 percent as the effect of earlier state incentives faded. Analysts caution that a single month can be misleading where policy deadlines move buying behaviour.
