Dry-firing (no or too little water in a tank heater) sends extreme heat to the joints, damaging seals, insulation and the tank. Equip heaters with thermostats and non-auto-reset anti-dry-fire devices that cut power at setpoints; storage water heaters need both auto-reset and dedicated anti-dry-fire protection.
