Water-based paint has three types: water-soluble (film former is a water-soluble resin such as polyvinyl alcohol and modifications, water-soluble alkyd or epoxy, inorganic polymer resins), water-dilutable, and water-dispersible (latex paint, using a synthetic resin emulsion). Its application is broad - wood, metal, plastic, glass and building surfaces - for home decoration, public places, offices and commercial/industrial maintenance. Limitations exist: it is corrosive to equipment (needs anti-corrosion lining or stainless steel, raising cost); bake-type water-based paints demand strict temperature/humidity control, adding conditioning cost and energy; pigment dispersion is weaker; and good conductivity requires special care in electrostatic spraying.
