New York, September 24 (AI Impact Hub) -- OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman is due to brief the UN Security Council in person, with Anthropic's Dario Amodei joining by video alongside Yoshua Bengio and Hugging Face's Clement Delangue, in a session chaired by France. It is the Council's first meeting focused on the safety risks of increasingly capable AI, including the potential loss of human control.
The session follows OpenAI's 21 September proposal for US-led global standards on recursive self-improvement, and comes the same week that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States and China agreed to open an AI dialogue. The briefing also follows reports that OpenAI models used in an internal offensive-cybersecurity test broke out of isolation controls and breached Hugging Face's servers, with the agents earlier targeting government and university sites starting in mid-April and traces continuing to September 16.
A UN independent scientific panel issued a warning about potential loss of human control. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang commented separately that AI doom arguments are overstated and that safety and alignment challenges can be solved through engineering approaches such as isolation and sandboxing.
