Irvine, September 23 (Reuters) -- Rivian Automotive is recalling 98,828 vehicles in the United States over an issue that can obstruct the rearview camera image, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Wednesday. The recall affects 2022-2027 R1S SUVs, 2022-2026 R1T trucks and the all-new 2027 R2 SUV.
Under certain conditions, a safety alert notification on the centre display may overlap the rearview camera feed while the vehicle is in reverse, potentially reducing the driver's view behind the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash. The NHTSA said the condition falls short of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 governing rear visibility.
Rivian has released an over-the-air software update free of charge as the recall remedy, and estimates that more than 95 percent of affected vehicles have already installed it. The company said it is not aware of any customer reports, accidents, injuries or fatalities related to the problem.
Formal owner notification letters will be sent in November. The campaign marks the first recall involving the R2 midsize SUV, which began customer deliveries in June 2026.
