Berlin, September 24 (KBA / TeslAnt) -- Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority reported that battery-electric vehicles took 32.4 percent of the new car market in August 2026, the first time the BEV share has exceeded 30 percent, with 68,900 registrations representing a 75.1 percent year-on-year increase. Chinese brands recorded the strongest gains: BYD registered 5,256 vehicles, up more than 370 percent year on year, and MG registered 3,307 units, both overtaking Tesla's 3,034 registrations in the month.
Petrol vehicle share fell to 16.7 percent and diesel to 10.6 percent, while BEVs and plug-in hybrids combined accounted for 44.4 percent of sales, underlining the accelerating structural shift toward electrification in Europe's largest car market. Across Europe as a whole, ACEA data showed new car sales rose 4.7 percent to about 800,000 units in August, while Tesla sales fell 36.6 percent with market share dropping from 2 percent a year earlier to 1.2 percent.
BYD sales were roughly three times the level of a year earlier, giving it a 1.3 percent share and a second consecutive month ahead of Tesla in Europe.
