Brussels, September 22 (E-Mobility Europe) -- Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 30.5 percent of new car registrations across 16 key European markets in August 2026, with 202,833 BEVs registered, a 54.2 percent increase year on year. The estimated EU-wide BEV share reached 31.2 percent, and year-to-date sales climbed to 1.67 million units, up 33.1 percent on 2025.
The result is running ahead of several forecasts made at the start of the year. France reached a 38.3 percent BEV share in August with registrations up 72.2 percent, while Germany recorded a 32.5 percent share and 34.5 percent growth with 68,980 BEVs registered.
Denmark reached 85.9 percent, Finland 52.3 percent, the Netherlands 48.9 percent and Belgium 46.2 percent, while Norway remained almost entirely electric at 98.7 percent. E-Mobility Europe Secretary General Chris Heron said Europe's electric future is arriving faster than expected and called on policymakers and industry to work together to sustain the momentum.
Poland remained the slowest major market at 4.8 percent, with registrations falling 8.4 percent.
