Open source is reshaping the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, with Chinese open-source large models surpassing 10 billion cumulative downloads globally, according to an Economic Daily commentary on August 14.
On Hugging Face, the world's largest AI open-source community, Chinese open-source models rank first in total downloads. OpenRouter data for July 2026 shows that the top five most-called large models globally were all from Chinese companies.
Recently, MiniMax open-sourced its H3 model, which topped Hugging Face's trending list within three days. Moonshot AI also announced it would fully open-source its flagship Kimi K3 model, currently the world's largest open-source large model by parameters.
The commentary notes that open source lowers the barrier to AI entry, allowing small teams to build on mature open-source results rather than starting from scratch. However, it also clarifies that open source does not mean free, as model deployment still requires computing power, electricity, and network resources.
As competition shifts from model parameters to ecosystem and services, open source is becoming a new advantage for China's AI industry in global markets.
