Latest data shows that the top five most-called large language models globally are all from Chinese companies, demonstrating China's leading position in AI application deployment and commercialization as of August 12, 2026.
According to OpenRouter data, the top six most-called models in July 2026 were all Chinese products. Chinese open-source models have surpassed 10 billion cumulative global downloads, ranking first worldwide.
This achievement reflects significant advantages of Chinese models in cost-effectiveness, Chinese-language scenario adaptation, and localized services, enabling Chinese companies to "overtake on the curve" at the AI application layer. The high call volumes indicate that China's AI application ecosystem has formed a complete closed loop from foundational models to vertical applications to end users.
The surge in API calls is directly driving computing power demand, benefiting AI chip, server, and data center infrastructure providers. Cambricon (688256.SH), a leading Chinese AI chip company, saw its stock rise 2.74 percent with near 8.7 billion yuan in trading volume on August 12.
Stanford's 2026 AI Index Report shows the performance gap between top Chinese and US models has narrowed to just 2.7 percent, underscoring China's rapid progress in closing the technology gap with international leaders.
