Geely's Galaxy Star 6 EM model is pioneering a "third track" in new energy vehicles through its methanol-electric hybrid technology, offering a unique alternative to pure electric and conventional plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The vehicle can run on methanol, electricity, or gasoline, providing exceptional flexibility. It achieves cold start capability at minus 40 degrees Celsius and operating costs of less than 0.2 yuan per kilometer, making it particularly suitable for cold climate regions.
Geely's Shenyang smart factory has begun production with an annual capacity of 200,000 units. In Heilongjiang province alone, over 3,000 methanol-powered vehicles have already been deployed, demonstrating the technology's practical viability in real-world conditions.
The methanol-electric approach does not depend on charging infrastructure or government subsidies, making it especially suitable for northeastern China where cold temperatures affect battery performance and charging infrastructure is less developed.
This technology represents Geely's strategy to diversify new energy pathways beyond the dominant pure electric and plug-in hybrid routes, addressing regional infrastructure gaps while maintaining ultra-low operating costs.
