StepFun announced on October 12 that its Step 5 Preview model is now available on Tencent's WorkBuddy AI workplace platform, with exclusive free access running from October 12 to October 25.
StepFun launched the flagship model Step 5 Preview on September 20, targeting AI programming, software engineering, professional knowledge work and finance, with an emphasis on improving performance on real-world agentic tasks. Full weights are set to be open-sourced on October 15.
The model uses a sparse mixture-of-experts architecture with 600 billion total parameters and 27 billion activated parameters, supports a context window of one million tokens, and natively handles both text and visual input. Its reasoning and agent capabilities are positioned to help WorkBuddy users handle deep research, information retrieval, data analysis, document and presentation generation, and sustained execution of multi-step complex tasks.
Commentators see the deployment as a signal of intensifying competition in the AI workplace segment. For StepFun, leveraging Tencent's office ecosystem offers an important channel for pushing model capability into consumer-facing scenarios at scale, though retention after the free period ends will depend on real-world performance on genuine office tasks.
