Chery Automobile issued an apology statement on October 11 over an incident in Malaysia involving an OMODA 5 whose rear axle detached while in motion, announcing a recall of 8,878 affected vehicles while simultaneously launching a preventive inspection campaign domestically.
The incident occurred on October 6 in Johor Bahru, where a 2023 model OMODA 5 suffered a tear in the rear axle beam longitudinal arm, causing the rear axle and rear wheels to detach. No injuries were reported. Investigation found that the welding strength at certain points on the longitudinal arm of that batch was insufficient, creating a risk of weld tearing under extreme conditions.
Chery will cooperate with Malaysia's Road Transport Department to carry out free inspections and replace parts where necessary. The older models involved have already been taken out of production.
Analysts suggest that a swift recall and inspection campaign helps contain quality risk, but brand trust and overseas reputation face a test. Automotive safety, testing and certification, and the parts supply chain all come under renewed scrutiny.
