On the afternoon of August 17, around 5 p.m., on Nanjing Metro Line S3 traveling from Gaojiachong toward Nanjing South Railway Station near Jingmingjiayuan Station, a red plastic bucket carried by a hatted elderly man tipped over, spilling nearly 30 eels onto the carriage floor where they slithered in all directions. The man hurriedly crouched to grab them barehanded, and nearby passengers stepped in to help — some caught one only to have it slip away, making for a scene both tense and lively.
Witness Ms. Chen said the eels 'escaped' because the bucket tipped and the bag wasn't tied, and warm-hearted passengers lent a hand. Nanjing Metro said it would clean the affected carriage and emphasized that aquatic products must be properly packed in sealed containers before entering the station. Under Nanjing's rail transit regulations, live poultry and animals such as cats and dogs are prohibited, but live fish and other aquatic products are not expressly banned; whether they pass is left to the on-site security staff's judgment.
