ByteDance Establishes Dedicated Model Alignment and Preparedness Division for Agent Safety

ByteDance's Seed team has set up a new department, Seed Model-Alignment & Preparedness, bringing together members of the former responsible AI team and part of the Chat team, with Yan Lin as head reporting directly to Seed leader Wu Yonghui. Establishing it as a first-level department represents a move to raise large model safety alignment to a higher priority within ByteDance.

Model alignment means constraining model behavior so AI output conforms to human intent and complies with safety rules, preventing the model from taking out-of-bounds actions on its own.

The new department has two core responsibilities: strengthening safety control capabilities for agent models, and guarding against CBRN high-risk domains, referring to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear risks. If such capabilities are called incorrectly by a model, the consequences could be severe. As ByteDance's agent models gain the ability to autonomously execute complex tasks, safety guardrails need to be in place ahead of time to limit dangerous behavior. Many industry players are concerned about uncontrolled autonomous agents given how quickly agent products are now iterating.

The restructuring indicates that leading large model companies have placed intelligent agent safety governance ahead of product deployment, prioritizing robust risk identification and control before model capabilities are fully released.

The move comes amid a broader push. The Central Cyberspace Administration's "Clear and Bright" campaign to rectify AI application chaos has processed more than 14,000 non-compliant AI products in its first phase. As of the end of August, 1,112 generative AI services nationwide had completed filing and 731 applications or functions had completed registration.

The National Cybersecurity Standardization Technical Committee recently published the Cybersecurity Standard Practice Guide on Security Guidelines for Agent Deployment and Use, which for the first time sets out security red lines covering the full lifecycle of an agent from assessment through deployment to decommissioning.
