Star (Y) connection joins element tails and feeds phase voltage (~1/3 line) to each element - milder, longer life, good for lower-rated elements. Delta connects elements across full line voltage - higher power and faster heating, but the element rating must match or it will overload and burn out. Keep terminals tight and check for oxidation, looseness and overheating discoloration.
